Position Summary:

We are seeking an energetic, experienced and collaborative Senior Scientist in our Protein Biochemistry and Biophysics group. The candidate will be expected to carry out purification and characterization of tagged and untagged cytokines, antibodies, and antigens expressed in mammalian or bacterial systems.  Experience with biophysical techniques such as light scattering, SPR and LC/MS methods is also expected. Clarity in communication as well as flexibility to adjust in a dynamic and high-paced research environment with shifting priorities and deadlines is required.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to a high-functioning protein production core group.
  • Utilize and develop novel biochemical and biophysical methodologies to express, purify and characterize antigens and antibodies.
  • Carry out small scale (1-10 mL) high throughput purifications on automated platforms for in vitro studies
  • Carry out medium scale (0.05-3 L) purifications on FPLC systems for in vivo studies
  • Execute protein conjugations to several groups such as PEG, fluorophores and biotin via NHS, maleimide and aldehyde chemistry.
  • Perform protein-protein interaction studies on Biacore platform.
  • Determine and compare thermal stability profiles across multiple protein constructs or formulations.
  • Assess biophysical properties of proteins in solution (mass, oligomeric state, purity, thermostability, endotoxin content)
  • Ability to support multiple projects and interface with teams across the organization.
  • Exhibit excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Accomplish goals under project team timelines 

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Structural/Molecular Biology, or related field with 5-8 years of post- graduate experience. Persons with MS/BS who have comparable depth and breadth of training and experience and meet job-specific criteria are eligible for consideration.
  • Experience with production of high-quality proteins for in vitro and in vivo testing.
  • Expertise in multiple biochemical and biophysical methods related to protein science: affinity (His-tag or Fc-fusion in particular), ionic, size-exclusion and hydrophobic chromatography, static and dynamic light scattering, 350/330 nm fluorescence, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) or alternative biosensors, ELISA.
  • Familiarity with refolding from E. coli inclusion bodies.
  • Ability to comfortably handle both HPLC and FPLC systems
  • Exposure to Hamilton automation platforms
  • Self-driven and willing to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of antibody purification methods for multiple species and understanding of technologies like bi-specifics, conjugation, and fusions.
  • Ability to produce complex antigens such as multi-transmembrane receptors, oligomers, and difficult to express and purify proteins.
  • Experience in evaluating protein liabilities and formulations.
  • Efficient time management and organizational skills.

The anticipated salary range for the position of Sr. Scientist based in our Menlo Park, CA office is $138,250-156,750.  The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type, and length of experience within the industry, education, etc.  Synthekine is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
