Using Chemotype Evolution, Carmot has developed a portfolio of drug candidates in metabolic disease and oncology.

Job Description

Carmot Therapeutics, Inc. is a biotechnology company headquartered in Berkeley, California. We are focused on the discovery and development of novel drugs for the treatment of metabolic diseases, and cancer. Carmot is applying an innovative technology, Chemotype Evolution, to overcome the limitations of conventional discovery technologies and identify superior drug candidates for challenging therapeutic targets. With multiple discovery programs and partnerships, Carmot is seeking an ambitious and experienced pharmacologist with strong animal model experience in metabolic diseases and translational skills to lead our pharmacology group.

Position Summary:

In this position, you will work closely with research and development teams to advance Carmot’s discovery and clinical programs. You will be directly responsible for leading the in vivo pharmacology team by designing and overseeing the execution of drug discovery studies using in vivo models of metabolic diseases. An important part of this role includes the investigation of compound efficacy and mechanism of action and how these attributes translate to the clinical setting. You should have a deep understanding of metabolic disease models and their translational applicability to diabetes (type 1 and 2), obesity, and diabetes complications (eg glaucoma and other eye related complications). You will also be working closely with several cross-functional teams and play a critical role in IND-enabling activities.

Carmot is a dynamic and fast-paced environment with a can-do attitude and a strong culture of innovation, initiative and ownership. You must be excellent at multi-tasking and have the courage to push the boundaries and assume a broad array of responsibilities.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Lead in-house and outsourced animal model studies for Carmot’s clinical and pre-clinical metabolic disease programs
  • Work closely with cell biology and lead discovery teams to design mechanism of action studies to differentiate and characterize lead compounds
  • Mentor scientists with varying levels of experience and build a cohesive pharmacology team with the ability to cover a diverse array of metabolic models
  • Work with senior management to develop project strategies and portfolio management decisions
  • Present research progress and planning to company, board of directors, and partners

Required experience and skills:

  • PhD in cell biology, pharmacology or related field with 8+ years of industry experience in in vivo pharmacology
  • A passion for hands-on research with the ability to manage day-to-day research projects and provide detailed technical guidance
  • Demonstrated ability to manage PhD-level scientists and leading multi-disciplinary project teams
  • Experience working with both biologics (peptides) and small molecules and a clear understanding of appropriate PK/PD considerations for each
  • Expertise in one or more of the following disease areas:
    - Obesity, diabetes and related pathologies such as neuropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular/microvascular disease, NAFLD/NASH
    - Metabolic research: appetite regulation, adipose tissue dysregulation and inflammation
  • Strategic thinker with strong intuition and ability to operate efficiently within a resource constrained environment
  • Cross-functional leadership experience and strong communication skills
  • Ability to creatively solve challenging problems and rapidly adapt to changing priorities
  • Applicants must have authorization to work in the U.S.
