Job Description

Today the company has seven disclosed programs, including four in Phase 2 or 2b studies, across three therapeutic areas: cancer, retinal diseases, and liver and metabolic diseases.

NGM’s CMC Department is excited to host a paid, part-time internship/co-op this summer/fall. Designed for current or recent graduates who want to gain hands-on experience working in a cutting-edge biotechnology business, this internship involves working closely with members of the Upstream Process Development team using cell culture techniques and bench scale bioreactors. We are considering college students from all backgrounds with basic wet bench biology experience and an interest in the development of medicines.

Core Tasks will Include a Combination of

  • Responsible for advancing their own self-contained project within Upstream Process Development
  • Plan and execute cell culture process development studies using bench scale bioreactors
  • Document all work clearly using an electronic lab notebook
  • Analyze and effectively communicate results through presentations and/or reports
  • Assist with maintenance of key lab instrumentation and ongoing cell cultures
  • Collaborate with other CMC functional areas including downstream and analytical development

Professional Learning Opportunities

  • Receive hands on training on bioreactor operation and mammalian cell culture techniques currently used within biotech
  • Attend CMC department meetings to learn about the process of advancing molecules from research to manufacturing and management of external vendors
  • Get coaching on communication, presentation and writing skills in a professional setting
  • Through professional mentorship, explore your interests in biotechnology, including both hands-on and shadowing opportunities


  • Start and end dates are flexible for this 3-6 month paid internship, which will take place on-site at our lab in South San Francisco for 20-40 hours per week
  • For undergraduate students: enrolled in a college or university for the fall semester of 2022, or recently graduated from the class of 2022
  • For graduate students: currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program, with the ability to work in lab at least 12 hours a week
  • Students majoring in the following areas: chemical or bio engineering, biotechnology, molecular or cell biology, biochemistry, or any other related life sciences/engineering majors
  • Some basic wet-bench biology experience preferred, including working sterilely within a biosafety cabinet
  • Knowledge of and proficiency using Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel, Word and Powerpoint
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for the scientific aspects of biotechnology research
