About NGM Bio

NGM Biopharmaceuticals is a privately-held drug discovery company committed to identifying transformational medicines that dramatically improve human health. Based on emerging human clinical and genetic observations, the company has devised several innovative experimental approaches to discover new therapies for the treatment of metabolic andcardiovascular diseases.

Job Description

NGM Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. is focused on discovering and developing novel, life-changing medicines for people whose health and lives have been disrupted by disease.  Our biology-centric drug discovery approach aims to seamlessly integrate interrogation of complex disease-associated biology and protein engineering expertise to unlock proprietary insights that are leveraged to generate promising product candidates and enable their rapid advancement into proof-of-concept studies. As explorers on the frontier of life-changing science, we aspire to operate one of the most productive research and development engines in the biopharmaceutical industry and our research team has a track record of producing an average of one new IND candidate per year. Today the company has seven disclosed programs, including four in Phase 2 or 2b studies, across three therapeutic areas: cancer, retinal diseases, and liver and metabolic diseases.

NGMBio is currently seeking an experienced and highly motivated Scientist with a background in molecular biology and recombinant protein expression to help us build innovative therapeutic biologics and to explore and develop novel technologies. This role is perfect for a recent PhD graduate in molecular or cell biology, looking to start a career in large molecule drug discovery and development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build expression constructs for recombinant protein production
  • Express recombinant proteins in mammalian systems including transient HEK293 and stable CHO cell approaches, and other organisms as needed
  • Apply molecular strategies to support protein engineering activities for early discovery and therapeutic programs
  • Provide molecular biology and mammalian expression expertise as a Biologics representative on cross-functional Research project teams
  • Lead and participate in mammalian expression technology development efforts to support pipeline advancement

Education and Experience

  • PhD in Molecular Biology or Cell Biology, or a related field, with 0-2 years of relevant research experience in industry or academia
    • Candidates without a PhD, but with 6+ years of industry experience are encouraged to apply as well, and will be considered for a title in line with NGM’s career ladder
  • Fluency and extensive hands-on experience in molecular engineering, using traditional cloning and/or modern synthetic biology techniques
  • Substantial in-depth knowledge of the relationship between molecular constructs and protein expression, especially for mammalian systems.  Experience in optimizing constructs to improve protein expression level is a plus.
  • Experience with transient and stable expression of recombinant proteins in HEK293 and CHO cells is strongly preferred. Experience with bacterial and insect cell recombinant expression is a plus
  • Experience in protein engineering is a plus
  • Excellent problem-solving and trouble-shooting capabilities
  • Good record keeping and organizational skills
  • Strong interest in new technology development and in translating scientific ideas into novel applications — experienced in accessing primary literature to incorporate new ideas and technologies in current methodologies to further our research goals
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate interactions with a highly interdisciplinary team. Entrepreneurial behaviors demonstrated by agility, accountability, transparency, resourcefulness, and ability to get things done
NGM offers a creative, collaborative, highly challenging scientific environment, along with a strong compensation package that includes salary, stock options, employee stock purchase program participation, 401(k) and a comprehensive, industry-leading, benefits package.
